Quarter Credit Hour: A quarter credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than:

(1) One hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work each week for 10-12 weeks, or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time; or

(2) At least an equivalent amount of work as required in paragraph (1) of this definition for other academic activities as established by the institution including laboratory work, internships, practica, studio work, and other academic work leading to the award of credit hours.

Catalog Course Description:This course focuses on the completion of the portfolio and enables students to begin their career search. The student should come into this course with work for the portfolio and determine the quality of the work so those enhancements can be made. The student will also complete a professional resume and begin the job search.

Instructional Methods:Educate through lecture, visual examples, relevant projects, lab work, group activities, visual problem solving and class critique.
Performance Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to do the following:

  • Self-marketing
  • Review specific information on intended employer
  • Evaluate and appraise employer needs
  • Observe and match strengths to employer's needs
  • Differentiate self from competition
  • Assess personal strengths and weaknesses
  • Customize presentation to meet employer expectations
  • Present a portfolio and articulate strengths
  • Organize artwork in a portfolio that represents the student's strengths
  • Present a formal package orally and in writing
  • Initiate post-presentation feedback
  • Identify career paths and salaries
  • Evaluate personal and professional skills and interests relative to their application in possible career paths and projects in graphic design
  • Create print and web portfolio that meets professional standards
  • Discuss and critique design work in a professional and accurate manner
  • Discuss and apply the professional practices of art direction design work in a professional and accurate manner
Grading:

Student performance may be evaluated based upon the following suggested criteria:

  • 15% Class Participation
  • 15% Homework
  • 70% Projects
Research Assignments:

Course relevant topics for research assignments may be proposed by students but must always have the instructor's written approval.

The school library can be used to access extensive databases which contain scholarly/peer reviewed articles from professional journals and trade publications. At least three such journals are required and must be cited in support of direct museum research.

Course Policies:See student handbook for school policies. You are expected to be punctual. Lateness to class/from breaks will negatively impact your grade. Mobile telephones must be turned off during class.

Project, Homework, Exam Policy:All assignments are due at the beginning of class. Late homework/projects will be dropped a full letter grade. Missed homework and projects must be made up and turned in by the next class session for which you are present.
